All This Time
I think the DFW Fiber Fest has resurrected my love of fiber. It was last weekend, and D. and I drove up from Austin to attend.
On Saturday morning, I attended Suzanne Correira’s mohair spinning class, wherein I learned that mohair isn’t so scary.
I particularly liked spinning kid mohair top into a fine two-ply.
Attempts to spin a funky novelty yarn weren’t so succesful.
This “feather” yarn was better.
On Sunday morning, I went to see Beth Brown-Reinsel talk about top-down Aran sweaters. Her construction technique is very similar to the FLAK, but I still learned a lot about yarn choices, and I learned to make honest-to-god nice-looking bobbles. I brought in my White Gansey, and she was quite gracious — I wanted to ask her how the yarn choice caused the less-than-stellar result. (Here’s a hint: it’s the two-ply, woollen nature of the Bartlett that probably caused the problem.)
We knit little sample sweaters. I knit this one out of leftovers from the Wool Peddler’s Shawl.
Now that I’ve returned, I’m more interested in knitting and spinning than I have been in a couple of months. The FLAK is back underway.
Sewing up the little sample sweater gave me confidence in my mattress stitch skills, and I think I might actually finish up Bristow next weekend.
The cross-stitch project is also coming along nicely. It’s about all I worked on during the funk, and I think it shows.
